How long is a bar of music? Convert bars to seconds at any tempo
One formula converts bars to seconds at any tempo and meter, with a reference table for 8, 16, and 32 bars — and the tempo traps that make the count come out wrong.

A bar lasts exactly as long as its beats do. Multiply the beats in one bar by 60 and divide by the tempo. In 4/4 that becomes 240 ÷ BPM: two seconds at 120 BPM, about 1.7 seconds at 140 BPM, about 2.7 seconds at 90 BPM.
Use one formula for every bar count
Tempo tells you how many beats pass per minute, so one beat lasts 60 ÷ BPM seconds. A bar is a fixed number of those beats, set by the meter. Everything else is multiplication.
- Read the tempo. Take the BPM from the track, the DAW, or a tap-tempo count.
- Find one beat. Divide 60 by the BPM: at 96 BPM a beat lasts 0.625 seconds.
- Build one bar. Multiply by the beats per bar: four beats gives 2.5 seconds in 4/4.
- Scale to your section. Multiply by the bar count: 16 bars is 40 seconds at 96 BPM.

One number is worth memorising: at 128 BPM, 32 bars is exactly one minute. It makes a useful mental anchor for house and techno, because every other length in the set becomes easy arithmetic from there.
Why 16 bars is the number people ask about
Sixteen bars is the length of a standard rap verse, a common audition cut, and a typical build or breakdown in dance music. At 90 BPM it runs about 43 seconds, which is why a 16-bar verse and a 45-second submission window fit together so neatly.
Knowing the duration changes what you write. If your verse has to land in 40 seconds at 100 BPM, you have 16 bars and a little room, not 24. That constraint is easier to design for than to discover during a take.
Convert meters other than 4/4
The beats-per-bar number is the only thing that changes. In 3/4, a bar is three beats: 180 ÷ BPM, so 1.5 seconds at 120 BPM. In 5/4, it is 300 ÷ BPM. In 7/8, a bar is seven eighth notes, so the arithmetic depends on whether the tempo is counted in eighths or in the grouped pulse.
Most DAWs report tempo in quarter notes regardless of the time signature. In compound meters like 6/8, musicians usually count the dotted-quarter pulse instead, which is a third of the tempo the DAW displays. Decide which unit your BPM refers to before you multiply.
Avoid the three tempo traps
Half-time and double-time. A drum and bass track at 174 BPM has bars of about 1.4 seconds, but the snare pattern invites you to count at 87. Count 8 bars that way and you will measure 22 seconds where the grid says 11. Neither count is wrong; they are different units.
A tempo map that does not match. If the project tempo was never set to the recording, every calculated length drifts. Align a known downbeat first, then measure.
A pickup at the start. When a section begins on an upbeat, the first thing you count is a partial bar. Start the count at an unmistakable downbeat and work backwards only once the phrase feels stable.
Turn the number into a decision
Duration is most useful as a constraint on structure. Write the target length of the section first, convert it to bars, and let the bar count decide how many ideas can live inside it. A 30-second intro at 128 BPM is 16 bars, which is room for one idea and one variation, not four.
