What this calculator is for
Use the result for delay time, reverb pre-delay, tremolo, chorus, phaser, flanger, or any plug-in that accepts milliseconds instead of note values.
How the timing is calculated
A quarter note lasts 60,000 ÷ BPM milliseconds. Other note values scale from that; dotted notes multiply by 1.5 and triplets by two thirds.
BPM-to-ms questions
- How many milliseconds is a quarter note at 120 BPM?
- 500 ms. An eighth note is 250 ms, a dotted eighth is 375 ms, and an eighth-note triplet is about 166.67 ms.
- Should delay time be straight, dotted, or triplet?
- Straight values reinforce the grid, dotted values create a rolling syncopation, and triplets add a three-part pulse. Choose the rhythm that leaves space around the source.
