Spotify Mix: make DJ-style playlists and use Spotify DJ
Use Spotify’s Mix button to add transitions to your playlists. Learn the Premium, sharing, offline and Connect limits, and how Mix differs from Spotify DJ.

Spotify Mix lets you put DJ-style transitions between songs in a playlist you made. Start with Auto, listen to the joins, then edit the ones that break the mood. Spotify DJ is a different feature: a personalised listening companion that chooses and introduces music.
Make a mixed playlist with the Mix button
Use the current Spotify mobile or desktop app and open a playlist you created. Spotify’s Mixed Playlists guide says the Mix button offers Auto as the quickest starting point. Play through a few joins before changing anything: the transition that looks good on a screen may still interrupt a vocal or drop.
- Make a short playlist with six songs that belong in one listening session.
- Open your playlist and select Mix, then Auto.
- Play across each song boundary and mark the two joins that feel abrupt.
- Open Edit, adjust those transitions, and save.
- Listen once from beginning to end before sharing it.
If you cannot find Mix, first check that your account is Premium and that you opened a playlist you created, rather than someone else’s playlist. Spotify also supports collaborative playlists, so the playlist can be made with friends.
Fix a transition that sounds wrong
A mixed playlist exposes BPM and key to help you spot promising neighbours. In its transition editor, Spotify lets you change volume, EQ, and low- or high-pass effects. Use the smallest change that solves the audible problem. If one song’s ending masks the next song’s first line, lower the outgoing level; if the low end piles up, filter one side. Then replay that exact join.
Try Smart Reorder when the sequence fights you
If several adjacent tracks need heavy repair, try Mix → Edit → Smart Reorder. Spotify says this uses BPM and key to propose a better sequence. Treat it as a suggestion: an easier harmonic join can still make a weaker story. Keep the new order only if the whole playlist flows better. You can also change the order yourself and return to Auto as a fresh starting point.
Check Premium, sharing, offline and Connect limits
Spotify Premium is needed to create and hear mixed transitions. Premium friends hear them in a shared mixed playlist; free listeners hear the songs as a regular playlist. Spotify says Bluetooth playback carries Mix transitions, while Spotify Connect plays the regular playlist. If you are preparing music for a particular speaker, check the actual playback route before relying on a handoff.
You cannot edit a mixed playlist’s transitions while Spotify is in Offline Mode. You can turn Mix off and on; when the playlist creator turns it off, everyone hears ordinary playback. These behaviours make Mix useful for a listening playlist, but they matter when you expect a transition to sound the same on someone else’s setup.
Choose between Mix, Spotify DJ and DJ software
Mix is for choosing songs and shaping how your own playlist moves between them. Spotify DJ is a Premium listening companion: it selects and introduces music and can respond to typed or spoken requests, where available. You do not edit its transitions as a saved mixed playlist. If your aim is to control decks yourself, Spotify also connects Premium to supported DJ software for personal, online mixing. Spotify’s current supported-app list includes Cross DJ, djay, eDJing, rekordbox, Serato, and VirtualDJ on desktop; mobile support differs by app.
For the hands-on route, start with our beginner DJ workflow and check the current compatibility and use rules on Spotify’s integration page. The software route requires an internet connection and is limited to personal, non-commercial use under Spotify’s terms.
Build a better first mix in ten minutes
Choose six songs with a clear opening, a lift in the middle, and a landing. Apply Auto and listen only to the five joins. Edit the two weakest transitions, then play the complete sequence. If the order is the real problem, compare Smart Reorder with your original arc. For a longer set, our energy-curve guide shows how to plan a peak without making every transition louder.
The goal is a playlist that earns each next song. Smooth transitions help, but selection and pacing do more of the work.
